The White House is monitoring reports of a suspected plague case in Russia after the death of an employee at a research facility that studies dangerous pathogens prompted quarantines and other precautionary measures, Axios reported Sunday.

A Trump administration official told Axios that the White House is aware of the situation in Russia's Irkutsk region in Siberia. Russian health authorities haven't confirmed that the woman died from plague and on Sunday said she had been diagnosed with pneumonia of unknown origin.

The woman, identified in media reports as 28-year-old Daria Shipilova, worked at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute. Russian media have reported that she may have accidentally broken a test tube containing Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague, before becoming severely ill. Russian authorities have disputed or declined to confirm parts of that account.

Nearly 200 people who may have had contact with Shipilova have reportedly been placed under medical observation or isolation. Hospitals in the region have imposed restrictions and some workplaces have introduced mask requirements. Officials have said the people being monitored have shown no signs of infection and initial tests have been negative.

The episode is likely to attract heightened international attention because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which emerged in China in late 2019 after early cases of unexplained pneumonia and ultimately triggered quarantines and travel restrictions around the world. The origins of COVID-19 remain politically contentious, including debate over whether the virus emerged through animal-to-human transmission or a research-related incident. The circumstances in Russia are fundamentally different at this stage: there is no confirmed outbreak and no evidence of widespread transmission.

Plague also differs significantly from COVID-19. It is caused by bacteria rather than a virus and can be treated with commonly available antibiotics when identified quickly. Pneumonic plague, however, is the most dangerous form and can spread between people through respiratory droplets during close contact. Symptoms can develop within one to three days after exposure.

The disease hasn't disappeared. Yersinia pestis persists naturally in animal populations in parts of Africa, Asia and even the western United States. The U.S. recorded a fatal pneumonic plague case in Arizona in 2025, although health officials identified exposed people and no secondary illnesses were reported.

For now, the key questions are whether testing confirms plague in the Russian laboratory worker, whether any contacts develop infections and whether investigators establish that an exposure occurred at the research facility. Those findings would determine whether the incident remains an isolated laboratory and public-health event or warrants a broader international response.
